THE FUTURE IS HERE

A Bay Area startup, has unveiled its AI-powered delivery robot designed to last-mile logistics.

Utilizing a combination of AI and low-cost passive sensors, Vayu’s robot aims to significantly reduce delivery costs, bypassing the expensive lidar technology. CEO Anand Gopalan highlighted their transformer-based mobility foundation model, which eliminates the need for lidar. As eCommerce grows, the robot, “The One,” can carry up to 100 pounds at speeds under 20 mph, navigating both sidewalks and streets without pre-mapping. With a compact design and a range of 60 to 70 miles per charge, it employs a proprietary vision system for autonomous navigation. An eCommerce company has agreed to deploy 2,500 of Vayu’s robots, indicating significant industry interest, although public acceptance and regulatory approval remain challenges. Vayu’s future plans include enabling quadrupedal and bipedal robot movement. This innovation promises to level the playing field for small and medium-sized businesses by offering more affordable delivery options, despite concerns about job displacement in logistics. As these robots appear on city streets, they signify a shift towards autonomous urban logistics.
