In 2006, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) launched an initiative called the Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (HI-MEMS) program. The goal of the project was to develop "cyborg insects" that could be used for surveillance and reconnaissance purposes by the military. Essentially, these spy bugs were real insects fitted with electronic components that allowed researchers to control their movements.
